It was -3 this morning and the roads were still icy in the middle of the day. I decided to ride some places which I have barely seen in the last 20 years. They weren’t great!
I covered 14 miles mainly on the road. It always surprises me when I ride in woodland areas, which I knew years ago, just how much they change. Paths change and trees fall down. The only solution I could think of after an uneventful ride was to drop in at Birkacre on the way back home and slither around some wet corners. I also pushed myself up the last bigger climb and felt good at the top. I set a best ever on Strava, which was not surprising since I usually just cruise up on the way home.
We may get some snow over the next few days but I don’t think it’s time to buy a fat bike with 4″ tyres. I can’t understand the attraction of such a sluggish bike. Even with 2.4″ tyres on my Boardman I was having to work hard on the roads so I’m sure a 4″ tyre would have been painful!
I keep thinking about some of the really good local routes like Brinscall Woods and Great Hill but they just won’t provide a decent ride until the weather conditions improve.
I hope to be out again by Friday at the latest but the potential snow may mess things up for me.
