When my wife asks me what I’d like for Christmas I usually just ask for a bit of leeway. This year could be different. Today I diced with a road rider on tarmac on my mountain bike for over 11 minutes and came out victorious. I analysed my performance later on the app. Strava and found how much power had been estimated for my segment. I generated more than twice the power of the rider on a road bike so I looked at the fastest riders of all time. Strava takes the gradient, wind speed, type of bike etc. into account and claim that their estimates closely match the figures produced by power meters. So imagine my surprise when I saw the power outputs of the fastest riders. I was only 8.771 out of 14,450 riders yet look at their performance.
I think we can discount the fastest rider who is said to have only generated 51 watts. He must have had his bike in the back of his car. Also the rider in fourth. If he really made 677 watts he must have been riding a cycle rickshaw. My figure of 308 watts for a run at 20.4 mph is head and shoulders above any of the others. I’m thinking for Christmas I should be getting a titanium and carbon fibre wonder bike and a lycra cat suit!
