Horses for courses.

Just as you need the right horse to perform best on a particular race course you need the right mountain bike. Today I wanted to push myself on 2 different pieces of trail. The first is a climb which takes over 2 minutes, so is equivalent to an 800m running race on a track. TheContinue reading “Horses for courses.”

Failed again.

Yesterday I did a days work. It happens occasionally. I was helping a friend who is a professional gardener so it was mainly grass cutting and weeding. It’s fairly physical but I wasn’t tired this morning so I did a not too hard ride. We’ve had no rain for a few days but some windContinue reading “Failed again.”

Bicycle detective.

I recently acquired the bike pictured above. I hoped it could have some value since I was told it was probably from the 1940s. I didn’t pay anything for it. It was just among some blacksmiths tools and equipment that my son was given. He is an apprentice farrier (he shoes horses) and he wasContinue reading “Bicycle detective.”

A ride for fitness.

After 5 days without a ride I was motivated to get out just to maintain my fitness. A bucket in my garden, which was empty last weekend, now has over 6 inches (15cm) of rain water in it. That’s an awful lot of rain in just a week so I thought that riding off road wouldContinue reading “A ride for fitness.”

Sun and wind.

It was sunny when I set off for my ride on Wednesday but rather windy. Storm Gareth (they give storms a name these days) had been blowing strongly but had calmed down. Although solar power is of little use in Britain we are currently generating a sixth of our electricity from the wind and thisContinue reading “Sun and wind.”

Younger readers might think that I’m about to review an exciting new mountain bike called the Sciatica, whilst older readers are likely to know that sciatica is a debilitating pain in the legs! Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve which runs from the spine to the legs. It causes a sharp painContinue reading “Sciatica……”

A pleasant surprise.

I’ve been thinking of going to an area which I rode regularly 20 years and more ago. Today I did and was pleasantly surprised. I rode the segment “Drop to Birky” where I set a new fastest time on my last ride. I noticed how much easier the Boardman is to ride fast on theContinue reading “A pleasant surprise.”

2 rides whilst tired.

I’ve been doing plenty of hard work at home in addition to daily dog walks so on my last 2 rides I’ve felt tired. I don’t know much about the science of training in this state. If I start out already tired will training improve my stamina? I realise that I won’t be out forContinue reading “2 rides whilst tired.”

2 challenges.

It’s good to have a challenge or 2 on a ride. It adds interest and gives your ride purpose. Yesterday I tried to achieve 2 things which were to ride from White Coppice to Brinscal woods and back without a foot down. The second was to do a fast lap or Healey Nab red route.Continue reading “2 challenges.”

Back to my roots!

Not a tale of my origins in Yorkshire but a great ride this afternoon to Brinscall Woods. The picture at the top shows a few roots at the bottom of a fantastic downhill section. It has loads of exposed roots and some big drop offs where the ground has eroded under the tree roots. It’sContinue reading “Back to my roots!”

More suspension testing.

I have been trying my Rockshox Pike fork with different numbers of volume spacers in my last few ride. For todays ride I removed them all. This would give me a more linear spring rate, rather than starting soft and ramping up as the spring compressed. The expectation is that the fork wouldn’t perform asContinue reading “More suspension testing.”

Last year I used spacers to reduce the air volume in my forks. I had noticed that the performance on repeated small bumps wasn’t as good as my older bikes on a bike less than 2 years old. Unfortunately I made 2 changes to the fork at the same time so I never really knewContinue reading “Pop!”

Snow fun.

Actually, for me, it’s more like “it’s no fun”, rather than snow fun. I’ve never enjoyed riding in snowy conditions and we’ve had snow lying on the ground for the last week. Instead of riding, to help my fitness, I’ve done some long walks with my dog, Freddie. I walked up Great Hill on SundayContinue reading “Snow fun.”

Icy roads.

It was -3 this morning and the roads were still icy in the middle of the day. I decided to ride some places which I have barely seen in the last 20 years. They weren’t great! I covered 14 miles mainly on the road. It always surprises me when I ride in woodland areas, whichContinue reading “Icy roads.”
